Pithoragarh History

Hill Station - Pithoragarh

Pithoragath is the easternmost district of Uttaranchal. Bound by Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east, it is strategically an important location. Pithoragarh is in the inner Himalayas at a height of 1,851 meters in a spectacular valley, called “Little Kashmir” The pilgrim route to Kailash- Mansarovar (a mountain and lake highly revered by the Hindus), traverses through this region.

The district of Pithoragarh was carved out of the district of Almora. On the south, Pithoragarh district touches the Tarai area of Nainital. Pithoragarh has many temples and ruined forts to testify to its erstwhile position as a stronghold of the Chand rulers.

Pithoragarh is gateway to the marvelous Milan Glacier, Chota Kailash and Namik. The strategic importance of the Pithoragarh lies in the fact that six passes to Tibet are in this district. Pithoragarh is famous for its cultural-religious fairs. The Valley about 8 km in length and 5 km in breadth, resembles Kashmir valley on a miniature scale.

Baleshwar : Baleshwar is 76 kilometers from Pithoragarh on the Tanakpur road. Its temples are the best examples of hill architecture. They were constructed by the early Chand rajas in the 8th century. At Gangolihat, 77 kilometers from Pithoragarh, is a Shakti peeth established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Lohaghat : About 62 km from Pithoragarh, is Lohaghat, an important historical center. About 2 km from here one can visit Abbot Mount and Mayawati. Abbot Mount is noted for its exceptional view of the northern hill ranges.


Chandak : Chandak, 7 km from Pithoragarh, is a beautiful location, commanding a panoramic view of the Pithoragarh valley. It is 1.830 meters in altitude. An important fair is held at the Mostmanu temple in August.



Dhwaj : Dhwaj, 28 km from Pithoragarh, commands a wide view of the majestic snow-peaks of the north. It is also important for temples devoted to Lord Shiva and Maa Jayanti.



Champawat : Champawat, 76 km from Pithoragarh, was once the capital of Chand Rajas, whose fort now houses a government office, the town has many architecturally beautiful temples.



Gangolihat: The sacred site is famous for the Hatkalika Fair held on the ashtami of Chaitra month at the Kalika temple. Devotees visit the shrine during this time with drums and flags to pay homage to Goddess Kalika.



Patal Bhuvaneshwar : Patal Bhubaneshwar, literally means the sub-terranean shrine of Lord Shiva. The cave temple is 91 kms from Pithoragarh and 14 kms north of Gangolihat. The way to the temple is through a tunnel which leads into the cavern through a narrow dark passage of water. The electrified sanctum sanctorum is deep inside the cave. The main passage also leads to several small caves where water oozing from limestone rocks have created various shapes arid figures. Some of them resemble various gods and goddesses of Hindu pantheon. In fact cave temple complex is said to be the abode of thousands of deities and people believe that these deities were consecrated by Adi Shankracharya. Narayan Ashram : The ashram was established by Narayan Swami in 1936, about 136 kms north of Pithoragarh and 14 kms from Tawaghat. This spiritual cum-socio educational centre is set at an altitude of 2734 metres amidst scenic surroundings. It has a school for local children's and imparts training to local youth. There is also a library, meditation room and samadhi sthal.
Punyagiri : Punyagiri is at a distance of 20 km from Tanakpur. Punyagiri temple, devoted to Maa Punyagiri, atop a rocky pinnacle is a noted pilgrimage.



Shiva temple : The Shiva temple at Rameshwarghat, 36 km from Pithoragarh, at the confluence of Ramganga and Sarju rivers is held in great reverence.

Thal Kedar : At a distance of 15 kms. From Pithoragarh, this place is of much religions importance. A large fair is held every year during Shivaratri.

Dharchula : 96 kms. From Pithoragarh, on the banks of river Kali, it's a transit pint, to Kailash Mansarover and Adi Kailash. It's a major wool and woolen products center.



Munsyari : Munsyari a small Himalayan township about 127 kms north of Pithoragarh and 66 kms from Jauljibi. It nestles at an elevation of 2135 metres. and the entire region is known as Johar valley. Munshyari is a base for treks to Milam and Namik glaciers. The trek from Munshyari to Milam Glacier, the source for Goriganga river is fascinating. Around Munsyari are alpine lakes of Maheshwari Kund and Thamri Kund. Munshyari Bugyal, an alpine meadow full of wild flowers is enchanting. Khalia Top and Betulidhar are suited for skiing.



Pithoragarh-Adventure Sports

One can enjoy rafting and canoeing at areas close to Pithoragarh. There are also possibilities for hang-gliding and other adventure sports. Khaliya Top and Batulidhar are perfect was skiing and other sports. Trout fishing can be enjoyed at the rivers in the district.

Thal is a beautiful place. Lord Shiva temple located at the bank of Ramganga river. Thal fair is famous for its cultural and religious congregation of different class,community and cast.In my childhood days I used to visit Thal fair with my Boobu(Late Shri Bishan Singh Kanyal,Village Deoli. My uncle still lives at village Deoli. His Name is Shri Dewan Singh Kanyal.
